Hand Foot Mouth Disease

It is a viral disease and caused by a virus i.e. Coxsackie virus.


Sudden onset of fever, sore throat, small greyish blisters in mouth, lasting for 4-6 days. Blisters may also appear on palm, fingers and foot- soles, for 7-10 days.

Method of Spread

It spreads by coughing and sneezing of infected person.
Also by direct contact with nose and throat secretions and faeces of infected person.

Incubation period

(The period between the initial infection and the appearance of symptoms)
It usually takes 3-5 days from date of contact.

Communicable period

(The time during which an infectious agent may be transferred directly or indirectly)
May be while sick and sometimes longer.


Parents should careful about hand washing, especially after changing the diaper of an infected child.
Avoid close contact.
Also careful about disposal of articles with discharge

What to do

Control fever with acetaminophen, as doctor recommended.
Prevention Teach all family members or staff of day cares for hand washing and hygiene
measures in the home or day cares.
