Scabies is an infection caused by a parasite - the scabies mite and called Sarcoptes scabiei.
a) Tiny blisters or burrow lines in skin.
b) Also seen in skin folds between fingers, wrists, elbows, thigh and abdomens.
c) Intense itching, particularly at night.
( The period between the initial infection and the appearance of symptoms.)
2-6 weeks from date of contact before itching appears.
(The time during which an infectious agent may be transferred directly or indirectly.)
Until mites and eggs are destroyed with appropriate treatment.
Treatment is needed for all household members, close contacts of the effected person even if they have no symptoms.
Student exclude from school, day care etc., until day after treatment.
Education about scabies.
Good personal hygiene, frequent bathing and washing of clothes and linens.
Wash used linens and clothes of infected person in hot water, or isolate for 4 days.
Scabies treatment is with a lotion or cream e.g. premethrin 5% dermal cream. Take a bath or shower and dry the skin before apply the cream.
If premethrin cannot be used then use a lotion called melathion 0.5% aqueous liquids. for example some people may be allergic to permethrin.
